How can a group travel to an activity venue with less impact? Share vehicles, choose a venue with a train or bus link where you can, and ask the provider what they suggest.
Travel is often the largest part of the environmental impact of a day out, and it is also the part that gets the least thought. Many adventure venues are in rural places, so it is not always simple, but there are options.
Share the journey
- Arrange car shares through the group and agree meeting points
- Hire a minibus for a bigger group, which takes several cars off the road
- Ask whether the provider can arrange transfers from a nearby station
- Agree arrival times, so you are not waiting around with engines running
Public transport
Some venues are close to a railway station or a bus stop, particularly those in or near towns and cities. Ask the provider if they know of a good route and how far the walk is. Check timetables for weekends and evenings, because services can be thin.
Choosing a venue
When you are comparing options, travel time and travel mode can be part of the decision. A venue that is a bit closer to most of the group, or that is easy to reach by train, may be a better choice than one that is more exciting but far away. Our provider directory lets you filter by location.
Parking
Rural car parks fill up quickly, and parking on verges, in gateways or on narrow lanes causes problems for farmers, emergency vehicles and local people. Use the car park your provider recommends and keep gateways clear.
Travelling light
Fewer bags means fewer vehicles. Ask your provider what is supplied, and keep personal kit to what you need. Our preparation guides explain what to bring.
In short:
- Share cars or hire a minibus
- Ask about trains, buses and transfers
- Park only where the provider says, and keep gateways clear
