Age, height and weight limits explained

Why providers set limits, how to check them before booking and what to say about medical conditions. Use it alongside the directory, then ask us if you would like help planning the day.

Why do adventure activities have age, height and weight limits? Equipment and techniques are designed for a range of bodies, and the limits keep everyone safe.

This guide gives general information only. Limits vary between providers, so always check with the provider and tell them about any medical or mobility needs.

Why limits exist

Harnesses, seats and fixings work safely within a range. A harness that is too big or too small, or a rope system rated for a certain load, can’t protect someone outside it. Some activities also need a minimum age so that people can follow instructions and cope with the experience.

The limits aren’t a judgement about anyone. They are about the equipment and the safety margin.

Where you’ll find them

Look on the activity page of the provider’s website, then confirm in your booking email. Limits can differ between two providers offering the same activity, so don’t rely on a general figure.

Medical conditions

Providers usually ask you to tell them about heart conditions, back problems, pregnancy, epilepsy, asthma, recent surgery and anything else that might matter. Some will ask for a short form or a doctor’s note for certain activities.

Share this early, ideally with the first enquiry. It gives them time to adapt the session or suggest another activity.

Access and adaptations

Many providers can adapt an activity or suggest an alternative for people with mobility, sensory or learning needs. Ask what they offer and what you need to do.

Planning a group day

If your group is mixed, check the lowest and highest limits across everyone in the group. If one person can’t take part, ask about an alternative so no one is left watching.

In short:

  • Limits protect people, they aren’t a judgement
  • Check each provider’s own figures
  • Share medical and access needs early
