Can you have a drink before or during an adventure day? Most providers say no, because alcohol affects balance, judgement and reaction time.
This guide gives general information only. Always follow the provider’s rules, which may be stricter than the ones here.
Why it matters
Activities such as climbing, high ropes, quad biking, archery and water sports need clear thinking and good coordination. A drink the night before, or a lunchtime pint, can make you slower and less careful. Providers can and do turn people away who they think have been drinking.
What providers usually ask
- No alcohol before or during the activity
- Allow enough time after a night out for it to leave your system
- Tell the instructor if you’ve taken medication that causes drowsiness
If you’re unsure, ask the provider what their policy is.
Planning a team day
Put the social part after the activity, not before. A meal or drinks at the end of the day gives people something to look forward to and keeps the activity safe.
If you’re organising a stag or hen day, tell your group the rules in advance. Share the provider’s policy in the invitation so nobody is surprised at the gate.
If someone arrives unfit to take part
The instructor has the final say. Agree in advance what happens to the booking if someone is turned away, so there is no argument on the day.
In short:
- Most providers don’t allow alcohol before an activity
- Plan the social part for after
- Tell your group the rules before the day
