How do you prepare for a long day outdoors? Dress in layers, pack water and food, and tell everyone the plan before you set off.
This guide gives general information only. Your provider will tell you what’s specific to your activity.
Dress in layers
The weather changes over a day, so wear layers you can add and take off. A base layer, a warm middle layer and a waterproof outer is a simple set. Avoid cotton for anything you might sweat in or get wet.
Eat and drink
Have a proper breakfast, bring water, and take snacks. For a full day, ask whether lunch is provided or if you need to bring it. If you have allergies or dietary needs, tell your provider ahead of time.
Sun and rain
Bring sun cream, a hat and sunglasses, even on cloudy days. Pack a waterproof in case of rain. If it’s cold, a hat and gloves help.
Footwear
Wear shoes that suit the ground and that you’ve worn before. New boots can cause blisters on a long day.
Keep your group together
- Send a short note with the meeting time, address and what to bring
- Agree what happens if someone is late
- Share one phone number for the day
- Plan how everyone gets home
Take care of yourself
Tell your guide if you’re getting cold, tired or sore. It’s much easier to adjust early than late.
In short:
- Layers, water, food and sun cream
- Footwear you’ve worn before
- A clear note to the group beforehand
