What to wear for coasteering

A simple kit list for a day scrambling, swimming and jumping along the coast. Use it alongside the directory, then ask us if you would like help planning the day.

What should you wear for coasteering? Wear swimwear under the wetsuit your provider gives you, plus shoes that grip wet rock.

This guide gives general information only. Always follow your provider’s kit list.

What you’ll usually be given

Providers normally supply a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet. Some also supply wetsuit boots and gloves. Ask when you book, because sizes can run out on busy days.

What to wear underneath

Wear swimwear or a close fitting sports top and shorts. Avoid baggy cotton clothes. A thermal layer helps if the sea is cold, which it often is, even in summer.

Footwear

Wet rock is slippery, so you need a good grip. Old trainers that fit snugly are a common choice. Your provider may give you wetsuit boots, which are warmer.

What to leave behind

  • Jewellery and watches, which can snag on the rock
  • Anything you’d be upset to lose in the sea
  • Loose hair ties and clips, if you have long hair, bring a secure band

What to bring for afterwards

  • A warm, dry change of clothes, including a hat in cooler months
  • A towel and a bag for wet kit
  • A hot drink in a flask
  • A snack and water

If you’re not a confident swimmer

Say so when you book. Coasteering is done in deep water, and good providers can tell you what is needed or suggest another activity.

In short:

  • Swimwear and a close fitting layer under the wetsuit
  • Shoes with grip for wet rock
  • A warm change of clothes for afterwards
