What happens on your first skydive? You check in, have a short briefing, meet your instructor, ride up in the plane, jump together and land under the parachute.
This guide gives general information only. Procedures vary between centres, so always follow your instructor.
Check in and paperwork
You arrive at the drop zone, show your ID and booking, and sign a form that explains the risks and records any medical information. Take your time and ask if anything isn’t clear.
The briefing
A short briefing shows you what to do. For a tandem jump you are attached to an instructor, so the main things to learn are your body position, when to move and how to land. It takes less time than most people expect.
Kitting up
You put on a jumpsuit and a harness, and your instructor checks and attaches you to their harness. You’ll probably wear goggles. If you have booked photos or video, you may meet the camera operator here.
The ride up and the jump
You take off with other jumpers and climb to the jump height. Centres jump from different heights, so ask what yours is. The door opens, you shuffle forward and your instructor takes you out together.
Freefall and canopy
Freefall lasts around half a minute to a minute, depending on the height. Then the parachute opens and the ride gets quiet and gentle. Your instructor may let you steer for a bit.
Landing
Your instructor guides you down and tells you when to lift your legs. Most tandem landings are gentle and happen on a soft surface.
The rest of the day
Allow half a day or more. Weather and queues can add waiting time, so don’t plan anything tight afterwards.
In short:
- Paperwork, briefing, kit up, jump, land
- Freefall is short and the canopy ride is calm
- Allow plenty of time in case of waiting
