What should you bring on a surfing trip? Swimwear, a towel, warm dry clothes and a plan for a cold change afterwards.
This guide gives general information only. Your surf school will tell you what they supply.
What you’ll usually be given
Surf schools usually supply a board, a wetsuit and a leash, and sometimes boots, gloves and a hood in cooler months. Check what’s included when you book.
What to wear underneath
Wear swimwear or a close fitting top and shorts. Skip cotton, because it’s cold when it’s wet. A rash vest helps stop rubbing from the wetsuit.
What to bring
- A towel and a changing robe or large towel
- Warm, dry clothes, including socks and a hat
- A hot drink in a flask
- Water and a snack
- Sun cream, because the sun reflects off the sea
- A bag for wet kit
What to leave behind
Leave valuables in the car or at the surf school. Keys can usually be locked up, so ask.
Be ready for cold
The sea is cold for much of the year in the UK. Warm up with a bit of movement on the beach before you go in, and have your dry clothes ready for when you come out.
In short:
- Swimwear and a rash vest under the wetsuit
- A towel, warm dry clothes and a hot drink
- Sun cream, even on a cloudy day
