How do you plan an adventure day for a group with different abilities? Tell your provider about the mix, choose an activity with choices built in and agree how people can opt out.
This guide gives general information only. Always share medical and access needs with your provider.
Start with honest information
Tell your provider about age ranges, fitness, confidence, any mobility needs and anyone who can’t swim. They can suggest activities and adapt the day. It’s much easier to plan around it than to find out on the day.
Choose activities with choices
Some activities let people take part at different levels. High ropes, kayaking and team challenges often have easier and harder options. Others, such as a long hike or a big jump, leave less room. Ask your provider for what they’d recommend.
Plan an opt out
Agree in advance that anyone can sit a part out. Give people a role, such as timekeeper, photographer or team captain, so nobody feels left behind.
Mix the teams
Mix abilities and confidence levels in each team so nobody is stuck at the back. Avoid choosing teams in front of the group.
Share the plan beforehand
Tell your group what to expect, what the activity involves, what to wear and how to say if they have a concern. This stops surprises and nerves.
Check age, height and weight limits
Limits apply to some activities. Look at the lowest and highest in your group. Our guide to age, height and weight limits explains why they exist.
In short:
- Be honest with your provider about the mix
- Pick an activity with levels and an opt out
- Mix the teams and share the plan beforehand
