How do you prepare children for an adventure activity? Tell them what will happen, pack the right kit and let them go at their own pace.
This guide gives general information only. Follow your provider’s age and supervision rules, and tell them about any medical or access needs.
Check the rules first
Age, height and weight limits vary between providers. Ask what they are, whether a grown up needs to take part and how many children each instructor looks after. Our guide to age, height and weight limits explains why they exist.
Talk it through
Explain what will happen in simple steps. Show them photos or a video from the provider’s website. Tell them about the safety briefing and who the instructor will be. A child who knows the plan is usually a calmer child.
Talk about nerves
It’s normal to feel nervous. Say that it’s fine to feel scared and fine to say so. Agree that they can stop or sit out a part and still be proud of having tried.
Pack well
- Clothes that suit the weather and the activity, and a warm spare layer
- Shoes that fit and grip
- Water, snacks and a packed lunch if needed
- Sun cream and a hat
- A change of clothes, and a towel for water activities
Medical needs and allergies
Tell the provider about allergies, medication, asthma or anything else in advance. Bring medication with you and tell the instructor where it is.
Let them lead
Praise effort, not just completion. Let them say how far to go. A good day builds confidence for next time.
In short:
- Check the age and supervision rules
- Explain the plan and talk about nerves
- Pack for the weather and tell the provider about medical needs
