Can beginners go canyoning? Yes, most providers run trips for first timers, as long as you’re comfortable in water and happy to follow a guide.
This guide gives general information only. Always follow your provider’s instructions and limits.
Canyoning and gorge walking
In the UK, many providers offer gorge walking as an easier version of canyoning. You wade, scramble, slide and swim down or up a river gorge. Canyoning can include abseils and bigger jumps, so ask what’s on your route.
What you’ll need
- A reasonable level of fitness for a few hours of walking, scrambling and swimming
- Being comfortable in water, as some sections are deep
- Being happy to follow instructions from a guide
- A head for heights, if there are jumps or abseils
What the provider gives you
A wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and harness if needed, and sometimes shoes and a jacket. You’ll have a briefing and a guide who knows the route.
Can you opt out?
On most trips you can choose which jumps and slides to do. Tell your guide what you’re happy with at the start.
Cold and conditions
Rivers are cold, even in summer. Heavy rain can raise the water level, so trips can be changed or cancelled. Read our weather and cancellation guide.
Age and limits
Age, height and weight limits vary. Ask when you book, and tell the provider about any medical conditions.
